In this blog assignment I will be focusing on the documentary “The Mask You Live In” and what the film focuses on as well as how it has influenced, and changed my perception on the way masculinity is treated in our society. I will also be talking how I feel from watching it, think about the film it self, and what change I feel I can bring to society after watching it.
The argument of the film made me feel very happy. The reason for this is, I am a strong believer in it takes strength to show weakness. You are not any less of a man because you express your emotions or show emotion. I feel as if with a film like this out more and more young men can understand that men and women are supposed to show equal amount of emotion and that it is not “girly” to cry or tell someone when you are upset about something. It is not good for anyone to bottle things up because it only leads to a breaking point where something bad happens and in a worst case scenario that can be self-harm or harm to another person or persons. How the film made me think was. I am glad that there are people who are beginning to have a better understanding for the correlation between masculinity and emotions. It is not far that men are looked down upon for expressing their feelings because everyone is going through something or has went through something that had a negative effect on them as a person. My entire life I have thought that it was okay to be a male and express emotions and let someone know when you are feeling down so it is tough to see the things other males go through because they could never vent about the things that are bothering them. The argument of the film makes me want to make change for many reasons but most importantly because. As I said earlier I am someone who grew up with the luxury of having people around me who supported me as well as people who I could be open with and express myself to without any worry of being judged for it. I would love to know that one day I can bring a child into this society who does not have to live with the stigma that just because he is a male that he can not talk to someone about the things that are bothering him or if he just needs to cry that that is okay to do.

Blog Assignment #10 Research Project: Miss Representation Research Project
In this assignment I will be talking about the documentary Miss Representation and what it has revealed about women in our society. I will also be writing about how it has influenced my perception on women in society, as well as the validity in everything they talk about throughout the hour and a half long film. How the argument in the film made me feel is hard to explain, I feel as if it affected me in a multitude of ways. Right from the beginning it gave me a feeling of guilt, because I was unknowingly going through life ignorant of all these things going on around me that had such a terrible influence on me. I also felt good as I continued to watch the film because I kept learning more and more about this issue that has had an overlying influence on our society. This film made me feel as if I had a better understanding of how women are misrepresented and treated poorly throughout the country no matter who they are, how rich they are, or how famous. The argument in the film makes me think that we can very easily make a change to what is going on in our society. I believe that if enough people knew about what was really going on in mass media with the poor representation of women then women could be treated much better. It really makes me think about how deep this really has throughout our society as well as how long it has been going on unnoticed or unexposed. The argument in the film makes me want to make change in many ways. Most importantly it makes me what to inform as many people as I possibly can about what is going on in our society. Another huge thing that I feel will help make change is making sure younger members of society understand this so they do not grow up with these poor misguided representations of women. This film helped me realize that there are many terrible things going on in the world around us but it only takes one person to make a change, only one voice to spread to the public and we can have a widespread understanding of what is going on. In this blog post I will be explaining the correlation between our discourse community values, the poem We Are Many by Pablo Neruda, and What is literacy? By James Paul Gee. The genre I chose for my interpretation is the traditional analysis essay where I will explain how I believe our discourse values tie in with the poem and article.
The foundation for the discourse community we share in our class is our discourse community values, which is on Professor Mangini’s website for all class members and website viewers to see. Everything we talk about in class is part of our discourse from learning to compose writing pieces in multiple genres to clarifying meaning for oneself. Without having set discourse values in our class our discourse would be completely different and possibly not as unique as it is now, it is because of these values our discourse has the identity it has. In We Are Many Pablo Neruda explains how a person takes part in an infinite amount of discourse communities. He talks about how he feels that he is a different person in every situation he is in because he uses different types of language in etiquette depending on what is going on around him. Each person in our class is part of other discourse communities other than the one we share every tuesday and thursday morning. Each person leaves class and goes to another class where they talk to different types of people and cover different subjects. As Pablo Neruda said “ When everything seems to be set to show me off as a man of intelligence, the fool I keep concealed on my person takes over my talk and occupies my mouth.” What he meant by this is in a certain situation he is another person, that other person is who he is in that specific discourse. This is exactly how everyone in our class is we all are someone in our class but someone else in our next. James Paul Gee gives an explanation to how literacy and discourse are extremely similar. They are similar in many ways because of the fact that there is an infinite number of discourses as well as types of literacy. Just like Pablo Neruda James Paul Gee gives a very in depth explanation of how we use discourse in ways we don’t even think of or that we are in so many different discourse communities we don’t even realize when we have switched discourses throughout our day. All three of these pieces identify with our discourse community because, one of of our main goals in the class is to be able to comprehend and understand the different discourse communities you are a part of. As well as being able to realize when you have joined a new community or changed to another whether it is in school, at work, or at home with family because all of those places are specific discourse communities themselves and have subdiscourses in them.
