Blog Assignment #14
Me and Alaina are just about finished our final draft of our research project. We have some tiny details that we want to go over but other than that we feel as if our project is the best it can be. We believe that our paper will have an impact on anyone who decides to read it. We give a detailed explanation as to why our thesis statement "Social media has influenced toxic behaviors in young women by making them insecure." holds a very real meaning. We give a wide variety of meaningful statistics as well as counter arguments for our stance on the matter. So that the audience does not finish our paper with questions and concerns about our argument. Something that really helped guide us through the writing process in this project was not just watching Miss Representation but reading the transcript because this gave us a better understanding of the films discourse, the better we understood the film the better we could present our opinions that were supported by facts we found. Alaina and I have recently finished our first draft of our research project. In order to make revisions, we brought our hard copy of the project to class on Thursday along with a print out of the assignment sheet. After receiving feedback from Professor Mangini and making the appropriate changes our paper will be complete. We hope that our project has significant impact on not only teenage girls, but women as a whole. The points that we focus on are extremely important when involving toxic behavior in young women. We want to see change in the future when it comes to social media degrading women and making them feel less beautiful. Our goal for this paper was truely to make meaning and show how women are worth more than what is portrayed through media. In class thursday we went over our citations as well as the things necessary to fully develop our argument. This was important because Alaina and I have to make sure we are giving credit to others where credit is due. As well as making sure our argument is strong and doesn't have any flaws so that our opinions are viewed as valid and our credibility as strong. We also reviewed our classmates prefaces, this helped because having another set of eyes looking at your work can help find mistakes you overlooked. Another very important thing Alaina and I did this week for our project was re-evaluate our sources and make sure they were credible sources, if they were not then a lot of our argument would be false or unbelievable. In this blog post I am going to explain the topic for my research paper which is going to be co-authored with Alaina Kimmel. We will be describing the genre, medium, citation style, ect. This post will give you insight on what our project will mainly be about. For our argument, Alaina and I decided to focus on the question “How does social media animate toxic behaviors in teenage girls”. Our main resource is going to be from the film “Miss Representation”. We chose to write this project in MLA research paper format and in a google document that is shared between us. Our primary audience is going to be targeted at teenage girls and we are going to focus on both personal experiences and global. We hope to give people a good understanding of what is really going under right under your nose in American Media. We believe that it is not fair for all of these people to go throughout life not knowing what is going on around them. In our writing we utilized everything we went over in class. The notes taken about how to express our points clear, and direct to our audience as well as making it so our bias and objectives were clear. We tried to use all the precise steps it takes to create a convincing and moving research argument like ours. We believe that after our fellow classmates read our work they will have an even better understanding of what we learned in class and what they wrote in their own research papers. A huge step to helping us work on our paper was using Professor Mangini’s lessons in class as well as his metaphors. One that me and Alaina though was very important was “Buckshot”, meaning we had a bunch of ideas shot all over the paper. We used this as a guideline for what not to do, we knew that we had to organize our work in a clean and understandable manner. No one wants to read a paper with ideas scattered all over because it is very hard to understand. Our topic was very serious with an important point we wanted to get across so we knew organization was key. Especially with two authors you have to make sure you are both on the same page without tangling up your ideas. It is vital for a co-authored paper that the audience understands you both are giving your opinion on the matter as well as fusing ideas together to get the entire point across.
In this blog post I will be writing about the connections I made between “Plato’s Cave”, “Miss representation”, and “The mask you live in”. As well as how the connections I have made will lay down the foundation for my research paper.
The way interpreted “Plato’s cave” was that all of these things happen around us and in front of us but we still don’t recognize or realize it because we are not aware of its existence. With the statistics and compelling visual scenes in both “Miss Representation” and “The mask you you live in” they explain how the media influences you to have this falsified image of women. That reminded of how before watching the films I had no prior knowledge of the media’s influence on us in this way, but after I realized how drastic it really is. Just like the slave who was freed, his entire life all he knew was the cave until he left and realized there was much more to everything than that cave. As he went back to tell everyone else they did not even recognize him, they could be the ignorant people who know nothing of the media’s influence. The overall of Plato’s cave is that it can fit into any situation where people are being influenced by something bigger than them. For them it was the people who chained them in the slave. For our society it is the media that is bigger than us and keeps us under an influence or “brainwash”. Without someone who gets on the outside of the cave or outside of the influence of the media the masses would never know there is another way of life. “Miss representation” shows exactly how the majority of our society is still stuck in the cave, a good way out is watching that film. I feel as if I have learned a lot about this topic just from watching that film and it changed my views on American media. Another film that I made a connection to was “The mask you live in”, this shows how not just women are portrayed a certain way in media. The media shows that men must be tough and strong or “Act like men” and can not show emotion. In this blog assignment I will be focusing on the documentary “The Mask You Live In” and what the film focuses on as well as how it has influenced, and changed my perception on the way masculinity is treated in our society. I will also be talking how I feel from watching it, think about the film it self, and what change I feel I can bring to society after watching it.
The argument of the film made me feel very happy. The reason for this is, I am a strong believer in it takes strength to show weakness. You are not any less of a man because you express your emotions or show emotion. I feel as if with a film like this out more and more young men can understand that men and women are supposed to show equal amount of emotion and that it is not “girly” to cry or tell someone when you are upset about something. It is not good for anyone to bottle things up because it only leads to a breaking point where something bad happens and in a worst case scenario that can be self-harm or harm to another person or persons. How the film made me think was. I am glad that there are people who are beginning to have a better understanding for the correlation between masculinity and emotions. It is not far that men are looked down upon for expressing their feelings because everyone is going through something or has went through something that had a negative effect on them as a person. My entire life I have thought that it was okay to be a male and express emotions and let someone know when you are feeling down so it is tough to see the things other males go through because they could never vent about the things that are bothering them. The argument of the film makes me want to make change for many reasons but most importantly because. As I said earlier I am someone who grew up with the luxury of having people around me who supported me as well as people who I could be open with and express myself to without any worry of being judged for it. I would love to know that one day I can bring a child into this society who does not have to live with the stigma that just because he is a male that he can not talk to someone about the things that are bothering him or if he just needs to cry that that is okay to do. Blog Assignment #10 Research Project: Miss Representation Research Project
In this assignment I will be talking about the documentary Miss Representation and what it has revealed about women in our society. I will also be writing about how it has influenced my perception on women in society, as well as the validity in everything they talk about throughout the hour and a half long film. How the argument in the film made me feel is hard to explain, I feel as if it affected me in a multitude of ways. Right from the beginning it gave me a feeling of guilt, because I was unknowingly going through life ignorant of all these things going on around me that had such a terrible influence on me. I also felt good as I continued to watch the film because I kept learning more and more about this issue that has had an overlying influence on our society. This film made me feel as if I had a better understanding of how women are misrepresented and treated poorly throughout the country no matter who they are, how rich they are, or how famous. The argument in the film makes me think that we can very easily make a change to what is going on in our society. I believe that if enough people knew about what was really going on in mass media with the poor representation of women then women could be treated much better. It really makes me think about how deep this really has throughout our society as well as how long it has been going on unnoticed or unexposed. The argument in the film makes me want to make change in many ways. Most importantly it makes me what to inform as many people as I possibly can about what is going on in our society. Another huge thing that I feel will help make change is making sure younger members of society understand this so they do not grow up with these poor misguided representations of women. This film helped me realize that there are many terrible things going on in the world around us but it only takes one person to make a change, only one voice to spread to the public and we can have a widespread understanding of what is going on. In this blog post I will be explaining the correlation between our discourse community values, the poem We Are Many by Pablo Neruda, and What is literacy? By James Paul Gee. The genre I chose for my interpretation is the traditional analysis essay where I will explain how I believe our discourse values tie in with the poem and article.
The foundation for the discourse community we share in our class is our discourse community values, which is on Professor Mangini’s website for all class members and website viewers to see. Everything we talk about in class is part of our discourse from learning to compose writing pieces in multiple genres to clarifying meaning for oneself. Without having set discourse values in our class our discourse would be completely different and possibly not as unique as it is now, it is because of these values our discourse has the identity it has. In We Are Many Pablo Neruda explains how a person takes part in an infinite amount of discourse communities. He talks about how he feels that he is a different person in every situation he is in because he uses different types of language in etiquette depending on what is going on around him. Each person in our class is part of other discourse communities other than the one we share every tuesday and thursday morning. Each person leaves class and goes to another class where they talk to different types of people and cover different subjects. As Pablo Neruda said “ When everything seems to be set to show me off as a man of intelligence, the fool I keep concealed on my person takes over my talk and occupies my mouth.” What he meant by this is in a certain situation he is another person, that other person is who he is in that specific discourse. This is exactly how everyone in our class is we all are someone in our class but someone else in our next. James Paul Gee gives an explanation to how literacy and discourse are extremely similar. They are similar in many ways because of the fact that there is an infinite number of discourses as well as types of literacy. Just like Pablo Neruda James Paul Gee gives a very in depth explanation of how we use discourse in ways we don’t even think of or that we are in so many different discourse communities we don’t even realize when we have switched discourses throughout our day. All three of these pieces identify with our discourse community because, one of of our main goals in the class is to be able to comprehend and understand the different discourse communities you are a part of. As well as being able to realize when you have joined a new community or changed to another whether it is in school, at work, or at home with family because all of those places are specific discourse communities themselves and have subdiscourses in them. The focus on this blog post is to go over my reflection of our class this far. I explain what changes I have made to my writing habits as well as how these new habits will carry over into other courses I take and other things in my life. I also explain how this class has influenced my new writing style and theory of writing. My focus on blog assignment #5 is how I used the writing process throughout my first draft of my narrative project as well as incorporating the clips from The Wizard of Oz to help my understanding for what I needed to do. My narrative is based on an emotional time in my life when my aunt passed away and how im impacted my mother and I.
How my narrative allows me to travel into my past and present emotions is by giving very vivid descriptions as to what took place in this moment. I also use specific words to give myself and the audience a feel for what I was going through at this time in my life. My narrative allows me to explore my heart by looking back at the exact things that happened in my life, it brings me a sort of bittersweet nostalgia. As I look back at how I felt then and how I feel about it now it lets me get an understanding of how I as a person can get past sad low moments in my life. This writing piece allows me to meet the element of meaningful story telling by reaching back into my memories for how I felt about everything going on in that moment and then how I feel about it now as I look back on it and the impact it had on me and my family. This piece really helped me reassess my thought process of how I can really express myself and what I have felt in moments like these through writing, I now realize the components I can place into my pieces that can bring in real emotion, memory, and imagery for the audience. What I feel shapes our sense of identity is both life events and the stories we tell ourselves about life events. The reason for this is in order to tell yourself stories about life events you have to experience life events that have an important or emotional impact on you. If you have to tell yourself that something bad happening to you is going to turn out fine in the long term then. You must have to experience how that original event has impacted you enough that you have to feel strong feelings and intellectual thoughts about the event itself. |
